The Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church, Houston, Texas was incubated in the heart of a faithful few. In 1904 in a small building on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, on the north side of Houston.
Destroyed by a fire the faithful few were held together in the home of Mother Drew on the 4500 block of Coke Street. The church was then relocated and built on the corner of Waco and Coke Street.
Approximately two years later a storm destroyed the building and once again Mother Drew opened up her home. Shortly afterwards the faithful few relocated to the corner of Waco and Vernon Street, where they remained for more than 18 years. Under the vision and leadership of Rev. W. Hunter, a new lot was purchased on the corner of Lyons and Waco Avenue. From January 1928, until this present historical moment in the life and witness of Christendom, Miles Chapel has existed. For over a hundred years we have existed to embody Christ both within and beyond the walls by equipping all people regardless of race origin-spiritually-economically-politically and morally, making the “WORD” become Flesh through tools in education, health, feeding, mentoring, and other ministries of outreach. We honor and thank God for the foundations and work of the faithful both living and beyond the river who set the standards to extend beyond the walls into the lives of people. We pause this day for our faithful who embody the word “mantra,” meaning “First to Serve.” 1904 – Present O rapturous scenes that wait the day, When Thou shall call me home, When I shall here no longer stay, No longer weep and moan. Long has my heart look’d up to Thee, My Master and my King No other hand can make me free, And to thy bosom bring Say gracious Lord, where am I now? Am I Thy servant still? Shall flesh and blood my soul over-throw? And set at naught Thy will? Nay but my soul shall rise and fly, To that bright world above; The heavenly Canaan in the sky, The city of Thy love. Hallelujah! The race is run! Eternal life is gained, My happiness has just begun, the crown of life obtained!
